On January 19, the Varsity boys played North Polk at the Nevada High School. The Cubs got down early in the first quarter, and the Comets led for the majority in the game. The Cubs had trouble stopping North Polk’s post offense with many of their points coming from in the paint.
In the second half the Cubs adjusted their low post defense and outscored the Comets in the third quarter 11-8. The fourth quarter is when the Cubs made their run with a press that was creating turnover after turnover. Trent Stahl had six steals and Om’Unique Wilkerson had five.
“We only allowed two points in the fourth quarter while we scored 20,” said Coach Chris Hinson. “Om’Unique hit a crucial three pointer to tie up the game in the fourth quarter at 43. In the final seconds of the game, Trent Stahl stole the ball and got a breakaway layup with two seconds left on the clock. The final score of the game was 45-43 the Cubs won.
Trent led the game with 25 points, hitting 12 out of his 19 shots. Om’Unique had 10, and Tyler Sansgaard had four. Devin See, Jacob Strottman, and Luke Merfeld helped out with two points each.
“We need to work on making our free throws when we get fouled,” said Coach Hinson. The Cubs went 4 for 10 on the free throw line.
The Cubs next game is against PCM on Tuesday, January 23.
