The Nevada Cubs boys JV team had an astonishing win against the South Hamilton Hawks on Tuesday, December 5, with a score of 53-38. According to Coach Greg Baethke, “I felt the Cubs played very good team defense, and we are getting better on the offensive side as well.”
Because it’s only the third game of the season, the biggest area of improvement so far is the way the Cubs play as a team. The Cubs have had many key players throughout the season, and each game it is someone different. A player that has stood at recently is Chase Lycke who has been leading with 3’s in the first couple of games.
The main focus on improvement for the Cubs is to work on individual performance and individual skill development. They would also like to improve the team aspect both offensively and defensively.
The mindset of the game has to be very focused, work hard and play with a lot of energy. “If this is the mindset,” says Coach Baethke, “the focus will always be there.”
The turning point of Tuesday’s game was in the second quarter, where the Cubs went from a single point lead at 12-11, then held the Hawks to just 1 point. The Cubs went into halftime with a 27-14 lead, and Nevada managed to maintain a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.
