The Nevada High School girls JV basketball team has been very successful so far this season, starting off with a 7-1 record.
Coach Dan Tuhn, says that his favorite part of the season has been building relationships and trying to build confidence in the players on an individual level in hopes to see them earn some playing time at the varsity level.
One of the biggest accomplishments of the team so far this year is that they are averaging 51 points per game, and they are holding the opposing teams to an average of only 25 points per game. That is one of the things that Coach is most proud of.
Although the team has already proved their success, that is not stopping them from working hard to achieve more of their goals. One thing that they continue to work on is building their athleticism and using it to their advantage.
Coach Tuhn believes that is important to help the girls set individual goals for the girls, that way they always have something to strive for. Several of the junior varsity players have shown a lot of improvement already, one of them being Shelbi Hazlitt. She has gained a lot of confidence this season, and her defense is one thing that she is continuously improving on.
The team’s game against Roland Story was definitely one of their biggest games this season. They won a close game, ending in a score of 41-36.
Coach Tuhn said, “The game went back and forth the whole way, but our zone defense really hurt them, and they struggled to score in the second half. It was an intense game.”
Bridget Cahill was able to step up and play some important minutes against Roland Story. She hit two big free throws down the stretch to secure a victory for the Cubs
Coach Tuhn believes that this team is very competitive, and each girl has different skills that they bring to the team. He is excited to see what the rest of the season will look like.
Savannah Skaggs, a junior varsity player, also is excited to see how the season plays out. She has really enjoyed growing closer with the team this season. Savannah believes that the team chemistry is great, and she has had a lot of fun spending time with her teammates.
“We’ve gone to an Iowa State Womens’ basketball game, went bowling at Perfect Games, and had a team breakfast,” said Savannah.
Beating Roland Story was one of Savannah’s favorite victories because the game was very close, and the Cubs finished with a victory.
Savannah’s focus this season has been to work on her shooting and to become more confident in her shot. She will continue to work on this goal, and she is excited to see the improvement among the team.
The Nevada girls’ junior varsity team will play at home on Tuesday, January 14th against Hampton.
