On Friday, January 25, the Nevada varsity girls played their last home game of the 2018-19 season against a very talented North Polk team.
Despite a ten point contribution from junior Kacie Rewerts, Nevada’s offense was not able to keep up. The final score was 22 -56.
Although it was a lopsided defeat, Nevada seniors Amanda Fortmann, Mikayla Long, and Riley Mailey were able to close out their strong careers with the Cubs with a final home game.
Mikayla Long said, “Participating in basketball has been a lot of fun. We have made a lot of great memories together, and I have made so many close friends through the sport.”
To start out the contest, Nevada’s offense was able to keep the game close with a score of 8-12, leaving plenty of promise for the remainder of the game.
In the second quarter, the Comet girls were able to spread the gap dramatically, out scoring Nevada 2-24. With an accelerating offense, North Polk entered the second half with a comfortable 36-10 point lead.
In the third quarter, Nevada’s defense did a good job of slowing down the Comets, holding the scoring to an even eight points for both sides.
Despite the good defense in the third quarter, the Comets were able to pull away and close out the contest in the fourth, out scoring the Cubs 12-4, and resulting in an unfortunate 56-22 finish.
The Cubs play South Hamilton on Tuesday, February 5 in Jewell.
