On November 20, the Nevada JV Girls basketball team kicked off their first game of the season against South Hamilton. The night ended with a huge win, final score Nevada-47, South Hamilton-23.
Mark Hersom, head jv coach, was asked about the game. He said, “Overall the team started off slowly offensively, but the defense kept it close as we had trailed 3-0 after almost 5 minutes of action. The girls were able to get some scoring in transition fast breaks which we did well and our full court press defense helped extend into a lead in the third quarter.”
The team played well on defense. Meredith Harter and Amelea Jones got several steals on defense which lead to fast breaks. Rylee Stevenson performed well on offense.
“As a team we need to improve on ball handling,” said Coach Hersom. “We need to reduce the amount of turnovers and make better decisions on passing, look forward not behind, and use the spot pivot to create space from the defender.”
“A key moment in the game, was when we scored our first basket,” said Coach Hersom. “Going almost 5 minutes without scoring really drives a coach crazy!”
Next week the girls face off against the North Polk Comets. Tip off starts at 4:30. Go Cubs!
