On November 20, the 8th grade girls basketball team hosted the South Hamilton Hawks at Nevada Middle School and won 37-9. It was a slow start of the game with the Cubs scoring six and the Hawks scoring zero in the first quarter. The turning point of the game was in the second quarter where the Cubs outscored the Hawks by 11. The surge was a result of executing their press effectively.
During the second half of the game, the Cubs had the challenge to solve the Hawks’ 1-3-1 defense and outscored the Hawks 20-7. The A-Team’s record is now 2-1 in the season, and the next game is at North Polk.
Coach Thompson was very happy with the balanced scoring. Ellie Tuhn led the team with 10 points. Alex Arnaud contributed eight, Mayzi Weig scored six, Hannah Walderna and Maddie Dunham each had four points. Rounding out the scoring for the Cubs was Tessa Borwick with three and Ella Higgins with two points.
The B-Team also beat the Hawks in a tight contest of 22-20. The key moments of the game were in the fourth quarter when the Cubs outscored the Hawks 14-0. The Cubs were down in the fourth quarter 8-20 and then made a big comeback winning the game 22-20. The B-Team’s record is now 3-0.
The leading scorers were Alex Arnaud with 10 points, Mayzi Weig with six points, Peyton Hanson with four points and Tessa Borwick with two points.
