The JV girls basketball team traveled to North Polk on December 11. The Cubs won 34-33 in a thrilling overtime game.

The Cubs trailed 26-9 at halftime and battled back with a zone full court press. In the halfcourt, the Cubs played a solid 2-3 zone. With the pressure the Cubs had some key steals that led to easy shots.

The Cubs had the game tied at 28 with three minutes left. The Cubs had some chances in the closing minute to go ahead but still played solid defense to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime, the Cubs’ defense got a couple steals, mainly by sophomore Gabby Sampson. She also knocked down two free throws and freshman Maddie Dunham converted on an inside shot to put the Cubs up 34-33. They held off the Comets in the closing seconds for the victory.

“The girls battled through some adversity of foul trouble, injuries and not connecting on shots, but they were in a positive position to make plays. It takes a team effort to hold an opponent to four points for a half, and  to come away with a victory,” said Coach Mark Hersom.

The Cubs were led by freshman Tessa Borwick with ten points, followed by Maddie Dunham’s nine, freshman Alex Arnaud’s seven, and Gabby Sampson’s five. Sampson also went 5-6 at the free throw line. Freshman Ellie Tuhn added two points, and freshman Savannah Skaggs added one.

The Cubs JV girls pulled even with a record of 4-4 on the season and next take on West Marshall Thursday, December 20.
