The Nevada girls JV basketball team took on South Hamilton on November 19th in Jewell for their season opener.
The game started off very slowly, and at halftime the Cubs were down 10-5. As both teams got better on the offensive side, the Cubs took the lead 24-21 with four minutes to go in the game.
Free throws were key in this game as the Cubs couldn’t convert on them in the last few minutes. Leading 26-25, the Cubs were whistled for a foul with .7 seconds left to go in the game. The Hawks banked in both free throws to take the lead. The last second shot didn’t go for the Cubs, so they lost 27-26 in the season opener.
Junior Meredith Harter led the Cubs with seven points, followed by freshman Maddie Dunham with six. Other scorers were sophomore Gabby Sampson with five, junior Megan Wessels with four and two each from freshman Ella Higgins and sophomore Taylor Conrad.
“I was proud of the way the girls fought back in the game as we struggled mightily in the first half and were able to find the basket in the second half. This group has not played much together, we were missing a couple girls, and we had an injury in the first quarter, but we will get better as the season progresses,” said Coach Mark Hersom.
The Cubs take on Roland-Story on Friday night at home.
