Nevada JV girls basketball put up a hard fought battle in Monday night’s mega night game vs Grundy Center.
The Cubs were looking to find team chemistry as the freshmen girls were teaming up with upperclassmen. The game was back and forth as each team made jabs at each other for the first half, and the Cubs trailed 19-17 at the half. The final score was close as the Cubs lost 38-32.
“The team needs to improve their free throw shooting as for the third game in a row we had more attempts than our opponent,” said Coach Mark Hersom.
The girls shot 9-22 from the free throw line, while Grundy Center shot 8-16 from the line.
“We’re looking for some outside shooters to make their mark for the program. We need some key baskets during the game to get momentum back on our side,” said Coach Hersom.
The Cubs made one three pointer on the night and Grundy Center made four.
Defense for the Cubs is really improving, and the team goal for every game is to hold the opponent under 40 points. The Cubs have achieved that in each of their first three games.
“With more experience I’d like that number to drop to 35, and I believe that can be done as at times we have a good mix of some height and speed to defense man to man. The Cubs haven’t worked on zone defense. That will slow the ability for some opponets to utilize their skills, ” said Coach Hersom.
Some of the nights top scorers were sophomore Meredith Harter with 10 points, freshmen Maddie Dunham with seven, and sophomore Taylor Conrad with six.
The Cubs JV team is looking forward to their next game Friday night, as they take on the Roland-Story Norsemen at Nevada, starting at 4:30.
