On Saturday, September 22, the varsity girls volleyball team took multiple teams head on in the tournament at Nevada. The Cubs went four and one on the day. They won their pool, beating four teams, and lost in a close game against Dallas Center-Grimes in the championship.
In pool play the Cubs took down Carlisle, winning both of the sets. Nevada won the first set, 21-16. Junior Morgan Tupper had a spectacular serving run in the first game to lead the Cubs to a win. The Cubs won the second game with a score of 21-15. Senior Mikayla Long lead the team with a .400 hitting efficiency.
“We controlled the momentum in both games. They were never able to mount any legitimate scoring runs on us,” said Coach Lori Stephenson.
In the Cubs’ second pool play game, they played Ballard. Maddie Stevens served nine points to help the Cubs take a good lead in game one. They won the first game 21-8. In the second game, Jaeden Heintz and Morgan Tupper both put up five serves in a row for the Cubs. The Cubs won, 21-10.
“Ballard never really challenged our momentum in the match,” said Coach Stephenson.
Nevada defeated Norwalk in a big match, losing the first game and coming back to win the next two. The Cubs lost the first set 23-21 due to some unforced errors and ball control problems. In the second set, Nevada came back and thumped Norwalk 21-14. Norwalk was struggling to score and Nevada took the opportunity get ahead. In the last game, the Cubs were playing right along with Norwalk, and the game had a lot of lead changes. In the end, Nevada won the game, 15-13 with a good serving run by Mikayla Long and some smart plays by senior Kelby Rewerts.
The Cubs took on West Marshall for the last game in pool play. The Cubs won 21-18 in the first game. Sydney Mosinski and Kacie Rewerts both had five kills for the Cubs. In the second game the Cubs came out swinging and won 21-11. The Cubs went 4-0 in pool play and faced Dallas-Center-Grimes in the championship game.
In the championship game the Cubs fell 2-0 against DCG. The ubs played hard and fought with them in both games.
“Dallas-Center-Grimes has some height and some defensive speed that gives us fits. We were able to play them a little better than we had last week at the Bondurant Tournament, but they were able to sweep the day and win the tournament championship,” said Coach Stephenson.
The Cubs finished 5-1 on the day and placed second in the tournament. “Overall, I was really pleased with how we played. To finish the week 5-1 was a great testament to how the girls are playing right now. We’re showing a lot of growth in every position, and we continue to play with a high level of composure,” said Coach Stephenson.
The Cubs play at home tonight, October 2, against PCM.
