On Monday, May 21, the Nevada Boys’ soccer team had their first round district game against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura. The Cubs won, 3-0 with Ayden Rhodes, Andrew Saunders, and Taylor Maiefski each scoring one goal. Devin See and Anthony Ellis had assists and Gage Maiefski had three saves in the goal.
Going into the game, they weren’t sure what to expect from GHV because they did not have a lot of film of them and didn’t have any common opponents. The boys did play them last year in the second round of sub-state so they had an idea of the style of soccer they were going to play.
Coach Sampson said, “We played one of our best games last night from every aspect. Our defense limited their scoring opportunities, our midfielders were aggressive and controlled the ball, and our forwards were creative.”
In the first 20 minutes of the game, Garner pressured them, but once the boys got settled in, they controlled the rest of the game. Many people played well but Rodrigo Perez, Emilio Saldana, Andrew Saunders, and Ayden Rhodes all played exceptionally well.
Kody Kruschwitz and Devin See also had another solid game at their center mid positions. Kody and Devin were able to control the middle of the field, which allowed the offenders a chance to score.
“Last night was a great example of the potential this team has had all year. When we are communicating, moving the ball, and taking shots, good things are going to happen. I think we found a rhythm last night, which is something we haven’t had for a couple of games,” commented Coach Sampson.
The boys’ soccer team has another district game today, May 23, against Gladbrook-Reinbeck at Cub Stadium at 6:30.
