On Friday, May 17, the Nevada boys varsity soccer team traveled to Newton. The Cubs were looking for revenge on last year’s 2-4 loss to the Cardinals. The night found the Cubs having a thrilling come-from-behind victory in their last regular season game. The Cubs won 4-3.
Varsity Coach Todd Sampson said, “I was very happy with the end result of our game against Newton. We struggled in the first half creating opportunities and possessing the ball, but we went into halftime knowing we could play better. Our second half effort and energy was the difference maker in this game. Everyone played well in the second half and we were able to score three goals in three minutes during the final 15 minutes to get the win. I thought Ayden Rhodes and Anthony Ellis really stepped up in the game and made some great plays for us.”
The Cubs had a rough start to the game finding themselves trailing the host team 0-3 at half. The defense was having a rocky beginning with some miscommunications that led to the Cardinals’ scores.
The Cubs than made some halftime adjustments setting them up to score their first goal of the night. Once the Cubs scored their first goal, they gained momentum for the rest of the contest. While the Cubs scored all their goals in the second half, they held the Cardinals scoreless. Some of the offensive statistical highlights were Anthony Ellis’s two goals, and Kody Kruschwitz and Devin See each having one goal. Keeper Gage Maiefski had 14 saves on the night.
The Cubs have won their first two district games and play at noon on Saturday, May 25, against North Polk at North Polk High School in Alleman.
