Last Tuesday, March 6th, the boys varsity track team traveled north to the UNI dome to compete indoors in their first meet of the spring season at the Dickinson Relays.
Dickinson is an annual all class meet that features some of the top competition in Iowa and many returning state and Drake Relays’ competitors.
Coaches John Pelzer and Mike Christianson took 14 athletes to the meet. The seniors included were Joven Nelson, Ethan Wild, Jacob Sanders, Hudson Vermillion, Connor Hines, Andrew Saunders, Dalton Baker, and Sam Abraham.
The juniors were Carter Franzen, Dean Check, and Dylan Jensen. Sophomores Elliot Frideres and Myleek Wilkerson and freshman Caeden DaSilva completed the team.
To start off the relays for the Cubs, the 4×200 team of DaSilva, Abraham, Saunders, and Nelson placed third in their flight of eight.
The other relays for the Cubs were the 4×400 and the 4×800. Both relays were made up of Sanders, Frideres, Franzen, and Check.
To start off the 4×800 Franzen ran, handing off to Frideres, then Check, and finally, Sanders.
The Cubs placed a close fourth in their heat of 15 teams, distance coach Mike Christianson was pleased with their performance.
The final relay for the Cubs was the 4×400, the final event of the night. Franzen started off the event for Nevada with a time of 56 seconds and handed off to Sanders who ran a time of 58 seconds.
Sanders handed off to Check who clocked in a time of 59 seconds, and Checked handed off to Frideres who ran a time of 60 seconds.
In addition Nelson, Saunders, and Jensen participated in the individual 200 meter dash, and Jensen, Nelson, and DaSilva ran the individual 60 meter dash.
The only hurdle event for Nevada was the 60 meter hurdle ran by Abraham.
To finish out the Cubs’ running events seniors Vermillion and Hines both ran the open 800 meter and 400 meter dashes. Baker also competed in the 800.
Moving to the field events, Wild threw shot put for the Nevada and DaSilva and Wilkerson both participated in high jump.
Competing in long jump were seniors Andrew Saunders and returning state qualifier Sam Abraham.
The Cubs had a great meet at Dickinson and head coach John Pelzer was very pleased with the boys’ performance.
The Dickinson Relays are always a great opportunity for athletes to get some pre season practice.
Moving forward Nevada, will race on March 26th at home and look to improve overall times.
