This past Monday, February 4, the 7th grade boys basketball played their first home games of the season against Roland-Story.
In the first game, Nevada’s A team was led by Alec Higgins who contributed 12 points. They fell to Roland-Story with a score of 45-35 in a hard fought game.
To start the game, both offenses were playing cold. Both teams scored just four points. Drew Hillman’s offense contributed with two nice jumpers and all of the Cubs’ first quarter points.
In the second quarter, the Cubs’ offense heated up, and they were able to post 17 points to best the Norsemen’s 13.
In the third quarter, Nevada’s game fell off, and they didn’t handle the press well. Roland-Story was able to convert turnovers into points and spread the gap with 19 points to Nevada’s two.
In the fourth quarter, Nevada cut the lead to just six points, but in the end was not able to hold on. They lost by ten with a final score of 45-35.
Coach Cary Thompson said, “The boys haven’t played well as a team quite yet.”
The boys move to 1-4 to start their season off and look to improve on their overall game and more specifically getting to their spots more consistently.
Nevada’s B team also played Monday night and was able to outscore the Norsemen boys with a final score of 37-17.
Nevada got offensive contributions from all ends of the team but was led by Carmieo
Quezada, a new student who recently moved from California.
In the first quarter ,Nevada scored nine points to Roland-Story’s five. Nevada’s defense was a huge factor in the win, and this was no different in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Nevada’s defense was really able to take over, which led to a lopsided 15-2 score in the second quarter.
Both offenses slowed down and the Cubs were just outscored, four to three, in the third quarter.
To finalize the game, the Cubs closed out with a fourth quarter score of ten to five.
Finally, the C teams played. Nevada played very well, starting out the game with a 12-0 lead. Going into halftime, Nevada maintained the lead with a 25-0 score.
In the third quarter, Nevada posted another 10 points and held a healthy 35-4 lead. At this point in a lopsided game, Coach John Jamison stressed for the boys to keep having good defensive positioning and to be efficient on offense.
Nevada closed out the game with a 37-8 win. The boys were led by Mason Harold with a great game and 12 points.
All three teams were able to learn and grow as a team and as individuals, win or lose.
The Cubs play next at Gilbert on Thursday, February 14.
