On Tuesday, November 13, Nevada’s 8th grade girls basketball team kicked off their season with a tough loss at Gilbert with a score of 56-12.

Walking into the game, Gilbert already had more experience than Nevada’s team. This was shown especially when they pressed and ran three different zones against Nevada. It took awhile for the team to adjust. The third quarter was Nevada’s best. They scored seven points compared to their three points scored during the first half.

Bridget Cahill was Nevada’s leading scorer with a total of six points, making up half of Nevada’s team points. Natalie Barber sunk a three pointer, and Paige Handsaker also contributed to the team total with two points.

Coach Cary Thompson said, “I hope the girls view this as an opportunity to measure our improvement throughout the season.”

Nevada’s B team was also unable to pull out a win, but was able to keep the score much closer with the final being 10-19.

This game proved to be more competitive, and Nevada did a nice job of adjusting to Gilbert’s full court zone, which is uncommon for B games. The B team also lost Kaleigh Groat to a concussion early in the game. Avery Hisons scored three points, and Natalie Barber and Paige Handsaker managed to each put two points up on the board for Nevada

The losses bring both the A and B teams’ records to 0-1. Nevada is looking forward to seeing their teams improvement as the season progresses.
