On Tuesday, October 9, the varsity volleyball team had a very thrilling night against the Tigers of Gilbert. It was a tremendous night to be a Cub after they beat the Tigers 25-15 in the first set, 25-12 in the second, and finally 25-16 in the last and final set of the night.
This match was a huge win for the Cubs. It puts them tied for first in the conference race. They had some great game stats, including a .376 kill efficiency throughout the night. They also had a serve percentage of 96% and had a total of 15 aces.
A pivotal moment for the Cubs was in the second set. Senior Amanda Fortmann served the team to a substantial lead and a huge momentum swing which the Tigers were not able to come back from. Fortmann also served for 100% on the night. Morgan Tupper, Ellie Gray, and Madison Stevens were also perfect from the line.
Defensively, Tupper led the way with 13 digs while sophomore Ellie Gray added eight and senior Madison Stevens had seven.
Coach Lori Stephenson said, “The girls did a great job preparing to play Gilbert in practice. They really leaned in to the tasks of improving their target serving and serve receive, and it showed on the court.”
Junior Kacie Rewerts led the team with 18 kills, but the Cubs also had a solid performances from Hannah Thompson with seven kills, Kelby Rewerts with six, and Sydney Mosinski with five.
Coach Stephenson also said, “We had Gilbert out of system and desperately changing their lineup to handle our serves from the beginning of the match, and our passers kept our offensive options high on almost every play”.
The Cubs will take on the Ames Cyclones at home on Thursday, October 11.
