On Saturday, September 29, Nevada’s varsity volleyball team traveled to Waverly to compete in a tournament. The Cubs put up a tough fight against all the teams they played on Saturday and walked away winning one out of six of their matches knowing they gave it their all.
The Cubs started off their day playing Union and Waverly-Shellrock. Due to the teams’ big hitters, their offense was a bit fast to keep up with for Nevada.
Junior Morgan Tupper said, “We did really well working as a team and moving forward after tough losses. We didn’t give up and we fought through every game hard until the end.”
Coach Lori Stephenson was happy with the amount of effort that was shown on the court.
“In the second pool, we played well against both Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Dyersville Beckman, but we just could not sustain a threatening offensive run,” Stephenson said. “Our only win for the day came against Mason City. They had some height, but our offense did a great job of moving the sets around and staying away from their blockers.”
Nevada’s last game of the day was against a team that is ranked fourth in 3A, Solon. The Cubs played fairly well, although just weren’t able to snatch the win. They are sure that if they got the chance to play them again, they would be able to walk away victorious.
Senior Mikayla Long said, “We did well playing hard against the bigger classes and ranked teams and were able to keep the scores close.”
Nevada is happy with their overall performance at Waverly and the effort given. The Cubs are eager to win their next game Thursday, October 4 at Greene County.
