The Nevada Cubs 8th grade football team traveled to Grand Junction to play the Rams from Greene County last Thursday, September 13.
Coach Greg Baethke had this to say, “The Rams defeated the Cubs 12 – 6 in a hard fought contest. The Cubs were able to score early in the first quarter on a 50 yard run by Drew Robinson (2pt. conversion failed) to take a 6 – 0 lead. That lead held through halftime, and late into the 3rd when the Rams scored the tying touchdown (2pt. conversion failed). The score stayed 6 – 6 late into the fourth quarter.”
“The Cubs were on a drive trying to score the go ahead touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in the game when a fumble stopped the drive with 12 seconds left. On the Rams first play they completed the winning touchdown on a 70 yard scoring play to defeat the Cubs 12 – 6. The biggest momentum change was the touchdown scored by the Rams in the third quarter and the fumble right at the end of the game.”
It was a hard game for the Cubs, but they learned a lot.
“We as coaches feel we have to improve on both sides of the ball. We will continue to work on our offensive and defensive execution,” commented Coach Baethke. “Our offensive needs to improve on its timing to make our offense more efficient. Tackling is a problem on the defensive side of the ball, but with more practice we can get this corrected.”
