On Saturday, September 15th, the Nevada Girls Varsity Volleyball team played in the Bondurant-Farrar tournament. The team ended up losing three matches and winning two.

The Cubs’ very first match of the day was a hard-fought game against Pella Christian. In the first set, Morgan Tupper went on a serving run early and put the team up 11-4. The momentum stayed with the Cubs, and they ended up closing the first set with a 21-17 win. In set two, they battled point by point, but couldn’t keep up with the Eagles and lost 20-22. In the last set, the girls continued to battle, but communication and unforced errors led Pella Christian to win 13-15.

The second match of the day was against the Dallas-Center-Grimes Fillies. Height was a big advantage to the Fillies’ game, a little more than the Cubs were used to. The team lost in two, with scores of 21-10 and 21-15.

The Cubs played Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Saturday as well. Libero Ellie Gray’s serving helped rally the team in the start of set one. Again towards the end of set one, serving was a big factor in putting the team up by ten points, winning it 21-11. During set two, Kennedy’s play was a lot cleaner, but errors from the Cubs were still kept to a minimum. The team finished off this set with a 21-17 win.

Next, the Nevada girls were up against Bondurant-Farrar. After a match off, the girls played a slow first game, putting them down straight from the start. The team could not get a run going, as the Lady Jays ran a great offense at the net and got the Cubs’ defense out of system often. This match ended 12-21 and 15-21.

The last match of the tournament was an exciting one for the Cubs. Jaeden Heintz started the match by serving six points to make the beginning score 6-0 against the Gilbert Tigers. Ellie Gray then served two aces, along with a block from Kacie Rewerts that stretched the lead and helped the team win the first set 21-14. During the second set, the Tigers were able to get on many runs that helped seal their set two win. The third set came and the Cubs were down 7-12, when Jaeden Heintz went up to serve eight straight balls. This helped the team play aggressively, and led the team to win 15-12.

The Cubs play next Thursday night at South Hamilton.
