The Nevada Cubs 8th grade football team traveled to PCM for their first game of the season last Thursday night. The Mustangs defeated the Cubs 22 – 14 in a hard fought contest.
The Cubs scored on their second possession in the first quarter to take a 6 – 0 lead (the two point conversion failed). The score came on a Karter Beving 50 yard passing play to Billy Gibbons. On the ensuing kickoff the Mustangs had a long return to set-up their first scoring possession of the game. The two point conversion failed with the score tied 6 – 6.
In the second quarter Karter Beving took the ball 60+ yards on a split end reverse to put the Cubs up 12 – 6. The successful two point conversion put the Cubs up 14 – 6. On the ensuing kickoff the Mustangs ran into the end zone and added the two point conversion to even the score to 14 – 14.
At that point neither team could find the end zone, until the Mustangs completed a 40+ yard pass play plus the two point conversion to put PCM up 22-14. The Cubs were unsuccessful on the last drive of the game.
“We as coaches feel we have to improve on both sides of the ball,” said Coach Greg Baethke. “We will continue to work on our offensive and defensive execution. Our offensive needs to improve on its timing to make our offense be more efficient.”
The Cubs’ next game will be Thursday, September 13, at Greene County.
