The boys’ JV and varsity teams faced Waverly-Shell Rock on the road last Friday. The varsity team won 5-1, but the junior-varsity team lost 1-2. Devin See scored two goals with Kody Kruschwitz, Rodrigo Perez, and Brendan Selberg scoring one each.
Many players played well during the game last Friday. Gage Maiefski started varsity for the first time and had a great performance for a freshman in his position.
Brendan Sellberg played exceptionally well. “He has been limited in playing time due to nagging injuries, but Friday he played the most minutes yet this season and did everything we asked of him,” said Coach Todd Sampson.
Devin See and Kody Kruschwitz both controlled the middle of the field and played very well against bigger, more physical opponents.
“Dennis Garcia and Carter Bremer are the two center backs and played very well as the anchors of our defensive line. They communicated well and had our team organized during set pieces. Overall, Waverly had a lot of trouble building a quality attack all night because of how our defense played,” stated Coach Sampson.
Going into the game, the Cubs felt confident about going to Waverly to get a win against an opponent that they haven’t been able to beat in the past. To win the game, the coaching staff really stressed the importance of controlling the ball, and the team executed this plan perfectly. The boys controlled all phases of the game and once they were able to score the first couple of goals, they kept the pressure on the opponents and didn’t give them a chance to mount a comeback.
“We responded well after they scored their goal by not hanging our heads or letting them get a quick second goal, which we have done in the past. I really think we found a rhythm in this game, and the guys felt comfortable and confident in the game plan,” commented Coach Sampson.
