The 8th grade girl’s basketball team played a game November 27, at Nevada Middle School against North Polk. Being the first game after Thanksgiving break for both teams, they were trying to get back into the groove of things, which resulted in low scoring first quarter. At the end of the first quarter the Cubs had a 6-4 lead.
In the second quarter, Nevada’s full-court defense sparked them offensively by creating many North Polk turnovers. Those turnovers were the turning point of the game. The Cubs outscored the Comets 11-1 during that stretch of the game. Coach Thompson was very happy during that period with the offense’s dribble penetration which led to many easy Cub baskets.
In the third quarter, the Comets seemed to wake up and outscored the cubs, 9-3. Nevada struggled with turnovers during that period of the game.
During the fourth quarter, the Cubs got back on track and dominated the Comets by outscoring them 16-5. The final score of the game was 36-19 with the Cubs winning. Overall, Coach Thompson was very happy with the unselfish offensive play and the continued improvement the team’s man-to-man defense.
Cubs leading scorers: Elie Tuhn had 11 points, Alex Arnaud had 8 points, Mayzi Weig had 5 points, Savannah Skaggs and Ella Higgins had 4 points, Tessa Borwick and Maddie Dunham each had 2 points.
The A team’s overall record is 3-1.
The B game found the Cubs winning 20-12. The coaches were very happy with the B team’s ball pressure in their half-court defense. The game was tied 8-8 at halftime. In the second half, the Cubs scored 14 points and limited the Comets to 4 points.
